SECTION 6.3

Accidents and Financial Responsibility

In Nevada all motorists are affected by mandatory insurance and financial responsibility laws.

Nevada law establishes minimum amounts of liability insurance you must have when you drive or own a vehicle. The insurance must meet the minimum requirements of:

$15,000-- for bodily injury or death of one person in any one accident;
$30,000-- for bodily injury or death of two or more persons in any one accident;
$10,000-- for injury to or destruction of property of others in any one accident.

Coverage must be reported by an insurance company authorized to do business in the State of Nevada. You are required to carry evidence of insurance in your vehicle.

The financial responsibility laws also apply to accidents and include the following provisions:

If you are in an accident that is investigated by law enforcement, your insurance information and a description of damages or injures will be sent to DMV financial responsibility section by investigating officer.
If you are in an accident that is not investigated by law enforcement and
  -- the accident causes $750, or more in damages, or
  -- anyone is injured,
  you must, within 10 days, complete and send a Report of Accident Form (SR-1) to:
  Department of Motor Vehicles and Public Safety
  Drivers License Division--Financial Responsibility Section

555 Wright Way, Carson City, Nevada 89711-0400

You must complete the accident report form (SR-1) if you are either the driver or registered owner of the vehicle.
The accident report form has to be filled even when you are the only one involved in an accident.
You can get a report form from any Driver License office, the Nevada Highway Patrol, or local law enforcement agency.
For any accident Financial Responsibility Section determines:
  --who was at fault;
  --if all vehicles or drivers were insured; and
  --the total amount of liability.
If you are at fault and do not have liability insurance:
  --your driver license and/or vehicle registration may be suspended;
  --you will have to post a deposit to cover the cost of the accident, or
  --make arrangements with the other parties to pay for damages or injuries.

If you do not report an accident, you driver license and/or vehicle registration may be suspended.

If you are involved in a traffic accident, you must:

STOP!
Get medical help for injured.
Warn traffic.
Notify law enforcement.
Exchange your name, address, driver license number, registration and insurance information with other drivers involved.
If the accident involves an unattended vehicle or other property, you must give the owner this information either in person or by leaving a note. Any local law enforcement agency can help you find the name and address of the owner of the vehicle or property.

The DMV operates an Insurance Verification Program to identify uninsured motorists.

Penalties for not properly insuring are severe; they include court and administrative fines and suspension of your driver's license and registration for that vehicle. You will be required to provide proof of financial responsibility to the Department of Motor Vehicles to reinstate your driving privileges. This is usually done by submitting Proof of Financial Responsibility (Form SR-22), which must be maintained for 3 years. You may also be required to take the complete driver's licensing examinations and pay a reinstatement fee before your license can be reissued.

DMV does not notify drivers when SR-22 coverage is no longer required. You must contact a DMV office, which can issue a letter for your insurance company.

Uninsured motorists who are at-fault in an accident must also deposit the funds necessary to cover the accident costs or sign a promissory note agreeing to pay the costs before they can regain their driving privileges. For more information, contact Drivers License Review at (775) 684-4876.
